What Affects The Price?

Surface Area

Larger jobs cost less per m² due to economies of scale in plant mobilisation and material delivery.

Base Condition

A sound existing base means overlay only. Weak or uneven bases require excavation and G5 compaction first.

Access & Location

Tight or remote sites require smaller equipment, increasing labour time. Distance from asphalt plant affects mix cost.

Asphalt Depth

Standard driveways use a 25–30mm overlay. Roads and heavy-traffic areas need 40–50mm, increasing material cost.

Site Preparation

Kerbing, drainage channels, stormwater management, and earthworks are priced separately but essential for longevity.

Additional Services

Road marking, speed humps, kerb lowering, and crack sealing are add-ons priced per item.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tar surfacing cost per square metre in Cape Town in 2026?

Residential tar surfacing in Cape Town typically costs R270–R420 per m² for a hot asphalt overlay on an existing base. A full new driveway with excavation and G5 sub-base runs R480–R750 per m². Prices vary based on site conditions, volume, and access. Contact us for a free on-site measurement and quote.

What is included in a tar surfacing quote?

Our quotes include site inspection, surface preparation, primer coat, hot asphalt supply and laying, compaction, and clean-up. We clearly state what is and isn't included so there are no surprises.

How long does a tar driveway last?

A properly installed hot asphalt driveway lasts 15–25 years with basic maintenance. Factors like drainage, base quality, UV exposure, and load bearing affect lifespan. We use G5 compacted sub-base and hot-mix asphalt to maximise durability.

Do you offer free quotes in the Western Cape?

Yes. We offer free on-site assessments and written quotations across Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West, Bellville, Durbanville, George, Hermanus, and all surrounding Western Cape areas.

What is the difference between hot asphalt and cold mix?

Hot asphalt (hot mix) is mixed and laid at high temperatures, giving a dense, durable surface ideal for driveways, roads, and parking areas. Cold mix is a temporary repair compound suitable for pothole patching only. NGST Civils uses hot mix for all permanent surfaces.

Can you resurface over existing tar?

Yes, provided the existing base is structurally sound. We mill or profile the surface, apply a tack coat, and lay a new hot asphalt overlay. This is significantly cheaper than full reconstruction and ideal for worn driveways and parking lots.

How long does tar take to dry / cure?

A freshly laid hot asphalt surface is walk-able within 24 hours and ready for light vehicle traffic in 48–72 hours. Full curing takes 6–12 months, during which heavy point loads should be avoided.

Do you work in the Eastern Cape as well?

Yes. NGST Civils operates across the Eastern Cape including Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), East London, Mthatha, Jeffreys Bay, and surrounding areas. Call us on +27 72 833 6295 for Eastern Cape quotes.
